The skin barrier: what it is, why it weakens, and how to support its recovery
Compartir
There comes a time when your skin no longer feels like your own. The moisturizer that always worked no longer seems sufficient. Your eye contour itches after using serum. Your face feels tight in the morning for no apparent reason. That feeling has a name: compromised skin barrier.
It's not a medical diagnosis. It's a signal. And understanding it is the first step to stop accumulating products and start caring for your skin intelligently.
What exactly is the skin barrier?
The skin barrierβtechnically called the stratum corneumβis the outermost layer of the skin. Its function is twofold: to retain water inside and to keep external agents (pollution, bacteria, irritants) out.
It is made up of corneocytes bound together by lipidsβceramides, fatty acids, and cholesterolβin a structure that dermatologists compare to bricks and mortar. When this mortar deteriorates, the skin easily loses water and becomes reactive to stimuli it previously tolerated without issue.
Why does it weaken over time?
Internal factors
With age, the natural production of ceramides decreases. From age 40, and especially during perimenopause, hormonal changes reduce the amount of lipids in the stratum corneum. The skin becomes thinner, drier, and more permeable.
External factors (and the most avoidable)
- Cleansers with a high pH that disrupt the skin's natural balance (the ideal pH is between 4.5 and 5.5).
- Over-exfoliation: the frequent and combined use of AHAs, BHAs, and retinoids without proper progression.
- Sudden temperature changes and sun exposure without protection.
- Excessively complex routines: using too many active ingredients illogically is one of the most common causes of a compromised barrier.
How to tell if my skin barrier is weakened?
You don't need a consultation to recognize these signs:
- Skin that itches or reddens with products it previously tolerated.
- Persistent feeling of tightness even after applying cream.
- Breakouts of imperfections on skin that wasn't prone to them.
- Subtle flaking or uneven texture with no apparent cause.
If you recognize two or more of these signs, your skin doesn't need more products. It needs fewer, and better chosen ones.
The most supported Korean ingredients to promote barrier function
Ceramides β the "mortar" your skin needs
Ceramides replicate the natural lipids of the stratum corneum. Their function is to restore cohesion between cells and reduce water loss. Studies published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology document their effectiveness in improving hydration and reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL).

Conclusion
Caring for your skin barrier is not a seasonal trend. It is the foundation upon which everything else is built: hydration that works, serum that absorbs, skin that responds. Before looking for the next active ingredient, it's worth pausing and asking if the foundations are in order.
At Seroum Skin, we believe that consistency with a few well-chosen products always trumps accumulation without criteria.
